An Event Apart: For People Who Make Websites

Ze Frank

A month before his 29th birthday in February of 2001, zefrank aggressively launched a campaign to get his closest friends to come to his birthday party at the Hog’s Pit Bar and Grill in NYC. He created a website called “How to Dance Properly” that featured short, looped clips of himself dancing like an idiot, and sent the link to 17 of his friends. Within days, millions of people around the world were visiting the site.

zefrank.com has since expanded into a large personal collection of Ze’s work: writings, games, interactive toys, videos and collaborative online social spaces. It has been featured in newspapers, magazines, forums, online journals and television shows around the world and has been visited by more than fifty million people in the last 4 years.

Ze consults for a variety of companies in the areas of online marketing, social computing and community building in online spaces. As an adjunct Professor at the New School: Parsons and at NYU: ITP, Ze teaches “Narrative in Technology Spaces” and “The Creative Act.”

He lectures throughout the country on how technology has reframed the concepts surrounding creativity in modern society, and is in the process of writing a book on using humor as a conceptual framework for business thinking. Ze is a member of the Contagious Media Research Group at EyeBeam, NYC where he studies the dynamics of viral communication. In his spare time Ze performs as a humorist. He recently performed at TED, POPTECH, SEAGRAPH, SXSW, Target, and for The New Yorker Magazine.
